Student Accommodation Stellenbosch, South Africa

Stellenbosch University’s 2026 budgeting estimates put a residence place at roughly R61,376 to R79,358 a student for the year, before meals. Applications for 2027 closed on 31 July, so if you have missed it, private accommodation is the realistic route. This guide sets out the verified figures and what I could not confirm.

Details come from Stellenbosch University’s 2026 estimated student fees and its guide for prospective students on accommodation, with a cross-check against the Sunday Times (8 February 2026), checked on 30 October 2026. The fee estimates are for budgeting only and are not binding. All amounts are in South African rand (R).

Applying and deadlines

  • Deadline: residence applications form part of the programme application and close on 31 July of the year you apply. Late applications are not considered.
  • Outcome: allocations are completed by 31 October and applicants hear in early November. A waiting list runs from 1 November.
  • No guarantee: the university says placement cannot be guaranteed and transfers between residences are generally not permitted.
  • Acceptance amount: R5,100, credited to your account. Cancelling on or before 31 October gives a full refund; after that a R900 fee applies.

International students

The 2026 fee estimates cover only South African citizens, permanent residents and refugees. The university’s guide says international students must pay a first residence instalment of R25,000 plus a R15,000 meal quota on or before registration. For their study fees they should contact Stellenbosch University International directly.

Private accommodation

Accommodation is not part of your academic offer, so securing it is your responsibility. The university’s Private Accommodation Office accredits off-campus housing and publishes the list, but it does not place students. Leases are signed between you and the landlord, and the university is not a party to them. NSFAS accommodation allowances apply only to accredited accommodation. Accreditation applications for the following year open on 1 September.

I have not quoted rents for private rooms in Stellenbosch, because I could not verify them against a reliable source. View any room in person or on a live video call, get a written lease and never pay a deposit before you have one.
